1 September On September 1, 1983, a Soviet fighter plane shot down an international Korean Airlines Flight 007 as it flew without authorization over the Soviet Union’s airspace. The passenger liner crashed into the sea near the island of Sakhalin, killing all 269 passengers and crew on board. The Boeing 747 was flying from New York to Seoul via Anchorage on its routine course, but as it approached its final destination, it began to change direction. In a short time the plane flew into Russian airspace, way off its normal course. Russia is developing a sea-based missile- and space-defense system, which will be deployed in international waters. The system is expected to become an integral part of the Russian Navy. The construction of the new sea-based missile-defense system has been entrusted to Almaz-Antey, the arms manufacturer that also produces the S-400 ‘Triumph’ missile defense system. Anatoly Shlemov, the head of national defense orders for Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation, told RIA Novosti that  “this task has been definitely set for the [Russian] military-industrial complex.” Almaz-Antey is not working alone on the planned system, Shelmov said, without specifying additional details about the top-secret project. Thousands forced to evacuate as wildfire rages near Spanish tourist hotspot (PHOTOS)

Spanish authorities have evacuated thousands of people from their homes as a massive uncontrolled wildfire continues to burn near the upmarket tourist resort of Marbella in the country’s south. Police found the charred body of an elderly man in a burned out house in the municipality of Ojen. Officers are scouring the building in case there are other victims. Over 3,000 people have been forced to leave their homes because of the fire, the Spanish daily El Pais reports. Over 250 firefighters are battling to extinguish the wildfire, which covers an area between 50-60 kilometers, with around 17 aircraft dumping water on it from above. The fire broke out near Malaga and quickly spread westward along the coastal strip on the back of low humidity, strong winds and record high temperatures. A UK court has struck down a $5.6 billion lawsuit filed against Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich by his former partner Boris Berezovsky. The case recalls the 1990s disputes over Russia’s natural resources. Judge Elizabeth Gloster ruled that Russian executive Roman Abramovich, the billionaire owner of the Chelsea Football Club, will not pay the huge sum to the self-exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky. The judge ruled that almost every aspect of the case was in dispute, RT producer Valentina Shpakova tweeted from the courtroom. Berezovsky appeared disappointed and slightly nervous, Shpakova reported. Abramovich did not attend the verdict announcement. After running into troubles with mobile  app stores , and being unceremoniously removed by Google from its app store  16 months back, Grooveshark music streaming app has now been made available again for Android devices. Launched in August 2012, the Grooveshark app - which is run by Gainsville, Florida-based Escape Media Group; and enables users to upload their own music that can be streamed by other users - was first pulled from Apple's App Store within days of its release, owing to copyright-infringement complaints; and then from the Google app store. India’s leading automaker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is planning to launch a new model named, Alto 800, which will replace the iconic Maruti Suzuki 800. It is believed that the new Alto 800 will be powered by a K10 engine and the model will be priced at below Rs. 2 lacs, which will allow the model to compete with the world’s cheapest car, Tata Nano. Alto 800 is expected to directly take on Tata Nano's top-end variant LX model in the market. According to the latest figures released by Nationwide, the prices of houses have recorded their biggest ever monthly rise during the month of August. The building society in the UK figures showed that the prices rose 1.3 per cent in August from July to reach £164,729 on average. The company said in a statement, “After favourable conditions during 2010 and the first half of 2011 in the group's core UK car insurance market, there has been a marked change in 2012, with premium rates falling and competitors seeking to add market share. MPs on the Treasury Select Committee have said that the fees on using rival bank’s ATM will result in reduction in the number of ATMs’ accessible to the customers. EasyJet to launch services to five new routes from Edinburgh

Aviation firm, EasyJet has said that it is planning to launch services to five more destinations form Edinburgh from next January. The airline will add two extra aircraft at the capital and will add 100 jobs at the airport. After the expansion, the airline will emerge as the biggest airline in Scotland.
