India's Swadeshi GPS Develops A Problem, But Remains Functional

Image
Highlights GPS based on seven satellites, last of which was launched in April Atomic clock on one satellite stops working, making it invisible Other satellites still transmitting crucial navigational information India's home-made navigational system, named NAVIC by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has developed a technical problem. One of the seven satellites in the Indian version of the American Global Positioning System or GPS is malfunctioning, as a result of which it's not visible. The seven satellites together provide strategic services, the last of them was launched in April last year. Despite the flaw, the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System is still functional. "The on-board atomic clock has developed a problem and we are trying to revive it," said Dr Kiran Kumar, Chairman of ISRO or the Indian Space Research Organization, to NDTV. Atomic clocks are used for precision time-keeping; India had imported these for the constellation of seven satellit...

India successfully test fires Prithvi-II missile

Image
India today test-fired its indigenously developed Prithvi-II missile, which is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads and has a strike range of 350 km, from a test range at Chandipur near here. The test was carried out as part of a user trial by the Army. The surface-to-surface missile was test fired from a mobile launcher in salvo mode from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range at about 0948 hrs. "The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the entire launch activities were carried out by the specially formed Strategic Force Command (SFC) and monitored by the scientists of DRDO as part of training exercise," the sources said. "The missile trajectory was tracked by DRDO radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations located along the coast of  Odisha ," they said. "The downrange teams onboard the ship deployed near the designated impact point in the Bay of Bengal monitored the terminal events an...

Graphene can be used to harness solar power: research

Image
Graphene, which was discovered in 2004 by Manchester University scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, can help in harnessing solar power, some researchers believe. Researchers have long been trying to find potential applications for use of the lightweight, harder-than-a-diamond material. Now, a group of researchers from the University of Manchester and National University of Singapore have found a way build multi-layered hetero-structures in a 3-dimensional stack to create an exciting physical phenomenon to explore new electronic devices. The researchers also found that blending graphene with other one-atom thick materials could help produce next-generation solar cells as well as optoelectronic devices. Speaking on the topic, Professor Novoselov said, "We are excited about the new physics and new opportunities which are brought to us by hetero-structures based on 2D atomic crystals. Such photoactive hetero-structures add yet new possibilities, and pave the...

Microsoft to Come up with Smaller Tablets

Image
It has been recently revealed that Microsoft has been working on the development of Surface tablets having Windows 8. It is expected that the production of tablets including a seven inch version will start by the end of 2013. When asked from Microsoft's authorities, it was found that they have taken the step to match their steps with the growing demand of smaller tablets. They further affirmed that smaller tablets are quite in vogue these days and their launch of new tablets will surely be liked by people. Though Microsoft has been trying to meet the demand, it has been found to be witnessing a number of criticisms as well. It has been said that the Surface Pro is under scanner because of its repair warranty and warranty of main parts. Microsoft has been providing one year warranty for both, repair and repair of main parts. But China has been asking that the company should be following the country's rule that is one year repair warranty and two year warranty for m...

India launches first smartphone in space

Image
India space agency has successfully launched the first smartphone of the University of Surrey's Surrey Space Centre (SSC) into orbit. The university's SSC said that the nano-satellite carrying a smartphone, STRaND-1 has been launched into space by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The STRaND-1 is a training and demonstration mission and is loaded with a host of experimental apps. The device was launched into a 785km Sun-synchronous orbit on ISRO's PSLV launcher. The apps for the first smartphone in space were developed by winners of a competition on social networking site, Facebook. The smartphone has an app called, iTesa which will record the magnitude of the magnetic field around the device during orbit. The app could be used for further scientific studies by researchers. The Scream in Space app, which was developed by Cambridge University Space Flight, will use the smartphone's speakers to play videos of the best screams in orbit while its mi...

Stuxnet was Sabotaging Iran’s Nuclear Plant a Year Earlier than Assumed

Image
According to researchers, the Stuxnet worm was officially authorized by former President George W. Bush in Jan 2009 to sabotage Iran's nuclear program. The previous version of the worm, Stuxnet 0.5, was at work since Nov 2007 and halted in July 4, 2009. Bush, the former President approved the use of covert activities in Jan 2009 to inhibit Iran from developing nuclear plants using uranium works at Natanz, a year before he left the office. This version of worm is used to disrupt machinery that enhances uranium. The worms find Siemens programmable logic controllers to close the valves at the right time that fed a gaseous state of uranium ore into centrifuges for separating out the uranium. By closing at the right time the valves disrupt the flow of the gas and thereby, damage the centrifuges. Firstly, the normal system state of machinery is analyzed by the worm so as not to allow negative effects of the damage take place. "It will also prevent modification to the valve...

RIM taking to Super Bowl airwaves with 30-sec BB10 ad spot

With Research In Motion (RIM)'s latest BlackBerry 10 (BB10) platform scheduled for launch towards next week, the Canada-based company has recently revealed that, amid its forthcoming week of BB10 launch activities, it is taking to Super Bowl airwaves with a 30-second BB10 commercial. According to RIM, the company will promote its new BB10 OS to the millions of captive spectators of the Super Bowl event - the biggest sporting event in the US - which will be held in New Orleans, La., on Sunday, February 3. RIM's tech-centric BB10 Super Bowl commercial will be aired just a few days after the company's much-delayed official unveiling of its new BB10 OS, and two accompanying smartphones which, as per reports, have been dubbed BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry X10. Along with the half-a-minute Super Bowl spot dedicated completely to RIM's soon-to-be-released BB10 software, the company also makes a marketing push for the OS on the two popular social networks, Facebook a...
