Royal kitchens reveal secret recipes

Image
Nearly six decades after independence, the hosts of the royal palace resorts are opening their recipe books to contribute to the experimental culinary wave sweeping through the kitchens of urban India. "Cooking a family recipe is like singing a 'ghazal'. It sounds different each time, but you know the flavor. One of our favorites was 'Shahi Sabzi Pulao'," says, Randhir Singh, scion of the family of the erstwhile Maharaja of Patiala.  It was a dry pulao that could be improvised with meat arranged in layers, he further adds. The pulao, originally cooked by royal chefs, has now been tweaked to suit the low-oil palate. The pulao can be paired with "Murgh Musallam Laung Elaichi", a sweet and sour dry chicken dish with hints of clove, cardamom, lime juice and honey. Like Patiala, till about a decade ago, Tripura was a culinary wilderness unknown to mainland India. The repast table of the Deb Barma family was a locked wonderland. "...

Yoga Benefits Can Be Measured with a Simple O2 Test

Image
Yoga benefits are in slower breathing The answer to yoga benefits is in the understanding of breathing. I am not talking about any breathing exercises. Breathing takes place 24/7 and the body requires oxygen 24/7. Hence, it is necessary to consider our automatic or unconscious breathing that is going on day and night. Let me start with traditional views on yoga breathing. There are several classic manuscripts on Hatha Yoga written between centuries ago: Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Gheranda Samhita and the Shiva Samhita. What do they teach about breathing? Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15 century) "3. So long as the (breathing) air stays in the body, it is called life. Death consists in passing out of the (breathing) air. It is, therefore, necessary to restrain the breath." "17. Hiccough, asthma, cough, pain in the head, the ears, and the eyes; these and other various kinds of diseases are generated by the disturbance of the breath." "28. The breathing is ...

How to Gain Weight Fast: Most Natural Weight Gain

Image
The most natural way how to gain weight fast is to improve the digestive system, liver function, and appetite (or hunger) naturally by improving blood circulation and increasing body-oxygen levels. When a person is underweight and struggles with weight gain, he or she always has low body oxygenation, generally less than 20 seconds for the body-oxygen test. This means chest breathing 24/7 (which drastically reduces blood oxygenation), possible mouth breathing (especially at night), and chronic overbreathing or breathing more than the norm. These abnormalities cause poor perfusion of all organs, a lack of hunger, low levels of energy, horrible quality of sleep and many other problems. This how to gain weight approach suggests to remove the cause of all these problems: too fast and too deep chest breathing. This how to gain weight program is shown on a diagram. It generally requires up to 30 seconds for the body-oxygen test in order to be very close to o...

Outdoor fast food ads may promote obesity

Image
Washington, Feb 1 : A new research from UCLA has identified a possible link between outdoor food ads and a tendency to pack on pounds. Dr. Lenard Lesser and his colleagues suggest that the more outdoor advertisements promoting fast food and soft drinks there are in a given census tract, the higher the likelihood that the area''s residents are overweight. "Obesity is a significant health problem, so we need to know the factors that contribute to the overeating of processed food," said Lesser, who conducted the research while a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the UCLA Department of Family Medicine and UCLA''s Fielding School of Public Health. "Previous research has found that fast food ads are more prevalent in low-income, minority areas, and laboratory studies have shown that marketing gets people to eat more. This is one of the first studies to suggest an association between outdoor advertising and obesity," said Lesser...

New plastic surgery technique launched in Nicaragua

Image
Managua, Feb 2 - A subsidiary of Nicaraguan conglomerate Grupo Pellas presented here a novel plastic surgery method for Latin America based on the use of stem cells extracted from the patient's fatty tissue. "There are several technologies for obtaining stem cells, but ours is the easiest, fastest, most effective and accessible," Dr. Michael Carstens, medical director of Pellas' GID Americas unit, told EFE after presenting the new method at a conference in Managua. Carstens said stem cells from fatty tissue have three functions: generating blood vessels, reproducing the surrounding tissue and calming inflammation. "Any tissue can be reproduced from them (the stem cells), which is why it depends upon what surrounds them - if you implant them in cartilage, they will produce cartilage," Carstens said. For Enrique Ochoa, head of the plastic surgery department at Federico Chavez pediatric hospital in Mexico, "the use of stem cells from fatty tiss...

New blood test to detect Alzheimer’s & cancer

A blood test that is used for antibodies which is a protein produced by the immune system may soon be used to detect Alzheimer’s and other diseases including some forms of cancer. Detecting the Alzheimer's via antibodies would be a simpler and less invasive method of diagnosing the disease. Typically, in developing blood test for diseases, researchers searched for antigens that are a protein secreted from a virus, bacteria, from some cancerous cells or in neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s that set off an immune response.  Only after identifying the antigen, the researchers would be able to search for antibodies or trace the signs that the immune system that has picked up and mounted a response. In Alzheimer's, or in a disease such as cancer, there is quite difficult to find out the antigens.  But researchers are doing ‘high throughput’ screening using thousands of synthetic molecules known as peptoids that could be bind with the antibodies.  The synt...

Cosmetic Surgery – Pros, Cons and Techniques

We have a tendency to be very 'down' on those who have had cosmetic surgery and to view it as a highly negative procedure. We say it looks 'plastic' and that it's selling out on 'who you are' and generally frown on people who resort to it. However the reality is that it is really the choice of the person who is having it done, and that in some cases under the right circumstances it can be a good decision that makes the person feel a lot more confident and happy with their looks. Tips for Lips – How to Get Beautiful Lips

Image
With such a range of colours and styles of lipstick, along with the various combinations you can use, this means there's a lot that can go wrong. Following these 'tricks of the trade' will help steer you clear and ensure your lipstick looks the best it can do: Firstly when it comes to lip liner you should use this differently depending on the shape and look of your lips. If you have thin lips for example then you can use lip liner to make them look thicker by applying it along the outer edge of your lips (just on the outside). This works especially well if your lip liner closely matches your lipstick or lip colour. Of course you can also use this technique in reverse to thin your lips by taking the inside line. Make sure that when you choose your lipstick colour you consider your other outfit as well as your outfit. Matching your lipstick with your outfit by wearing red lipstick with a red dress for example can be a very sexy and stylish look. Pink with a red dres...

Chicken Pox Symptoms

Chicken pox is a highly contagious disease which causes the afflicted to break out in a rash featuring large red spots and boils that we largely associate with children at school. The condition will spread very easily but during its course the body will quickly build up antibodies against it. This way the individual will be protected against future occurrences of the disease. This is actually a desirable scenario as chicken pox symptoms are far more severe in adults than they are in children – meaning that some parents will try and purposefully infect their children so that they don't have to worry about the condition in later life. The disease is ultimately self limiting and only really a problem for those who contract it when they still in their infancy or pregnant. However in rare circumstances it can be dangerous for adults in their middle age too where the symptoms will be far more severe. To find out if you or your child currently have, or have ever had chicken pox, yo...

AIDS : The Facts

Introduction The first cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) were reported in the U.S. in June of 1981. The occurrence of the syndrome among homosexual men, intravenous (IV) drug abusers and, later, blood transfusion recipients and persons with hemophilia suggested a transmissible agent as the cause. In 1984, scientists identified a retrovirus, human immune deficiency virus (HIV), also known as human T-Iymphotropic virus type III/lymphoadenopathy, associated virus (HTLV-III/LAV), as the primary cause of AIDS. In 1985, screening tests to detect antibodies to HIV were licensed, allowing identification of infected individuals and the screening of the blood supply. Researchers have been able to map the genetic structure of HIV and to demonstrate the nature of the immune defect. Ongoing research is aimed at identifying risk factors and preventive strategies, evaluating antiviral drugs, developing drugs to augment the immune system, and developing a vaccine. An estimated...
