Access to Gmail Blocked in Iran
It has been reported that popular web pages of Google have
been banned in Iran. The content of the Google web pages have been found
mutilated and they will be filtered before making the web pages accessible in
Iran once again.
The information regarding blocking the web pages was made
through mobile texts. Iranians having Gmail account were facing difficulties in
accessing the account and their emails. They were asked to go through virtual
private network software for getting a full access to their Gmail accounts.
It has been informed that the virtual private network or VPN
is used by tech savvy Iranians for dealing with online censorship. Gmail is a
very popular email address used by business persons and workers for
communicating.
In the month of February as well, the authorities of Iran
cut the access to Google and Gmail because of elections. Besides, many social
networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are also being censored by
the authorities of Iran. Mohammad Soleimani, a lawmaker said, “Cutting access
to the Internet is not possible at all, because it would amount to imposing
sanctions on ourselves, which would not be logical. However, the filtering will
remain in place”.
