Man rescued after falling down blowhole

A man in his 20s has been airlifted to Auckland Hospital after falling into a blowhole at Muriwai Beach, northwest of Auckland city.
St John Operations Team Manager Patsy Carlyle said the location made the rescue extremely challenging.
Volunteers from the Muriwai First response group were the first to reach the injured man.
A doctor, who was visiting from Chile, took pictures of the man's injuries and sent them to St John paramedics to determine what rescue response was required.
Emergency services reached the man at about 5pm.
Fire staff said the injuries were assessed as moderate to serious but were not life threatening.
"From the pictures, we were able to see that we needed the NZ Fire Service high angle rescue team from Auckland city. They were able to extricate the man from his position and get him to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. It was a great team effort in very challenging conditions," Ms Carlyle said.
The injured man was initially thought to be aged in his 30s.
